Alistera's journey — visas, prayers and a flight to surgery

Alowo Alistera needed surgery that could not be done close to home. In 2016 the EDYAC team travelled to Kampala with her and her father to process visas and air tickets for the Democratic Republic of Congo, where her surgery would take place.

“Pray with us for the favour of God as we approach the various offices.”

Weeks later came the praise report: visas had been secured for Alistera and her father. EDYAC's photographs follow Alistera from her first visits to the EDYAC office through to home visits with her family.

David stands on his own

David was brought to EDYAC by his grandmother with neglected double clubfeet. He underwent surgery on both legs.

“David can now stand on his own without the help of crutches. The surgeries on both his legs were very successful and his recovery process is almost complete.”

Clubfoot is one of the most common conditions EDYAC sees — and one of the most treatable. Our orthopaedic surgery album is full of children taking their first steady steps.

Mercy sits up without support

Six-year-old Mercy came to EDYAC with neglected hydrocephalus. She was so underweight that the size of her head was affecting her spine.

At the Healing House she received the nutrition she needed. She became able to sit up without support, the pain in her spine went down, and she began treatment for her head.

Inside the Healing House, where recovery holds

The Healing House is a temporary place where children who have had surgery, and are not recovering well in the community, can be admitted for a limited time — so that they do not relapse into their previous state. It was established to:

  • Nurse wounds and sores
  • Provide a good, hygienic environment for effective healing
  • Provide good, healthy meals to boost the children's immunity
  • Counsel parents, guardians and children on how to better their lives

Today it is also where children receive physiotherapy. And families give back: parents of children whose lives have been transformed have brought food items to support the house.

Care & Share — blessing families after treatment

Through Care & Share, EDYAC blesses children and their families with clothes and essentials — and, for some, walking crutches — at our office and out in their communities. It is a simple way to say: you are not forgotten.
